While the process of filing taxes can be daunting, it doesn’t have to be when getting insider tips from a top CPA in Jacksonville like Brock CPA. We’re here to help you avoid common tax filing errors that can save you from potential headaches and costly penalties. You’ve come to the right place! So, grab a snack, take a few deep breaths, and let’s dive into some valuable tips straight from the professionals at Brock CPA that will help you navigate the tax filing landscape with ease. 1.   Gather All Necessary Documents First things first, you need to ensure that you have all of the necessary documents ahead of starting your tax filing. For individuals, this includes W-2 forms from employers, 1099 forms for additional income, and receipts for deductible expenses. Jacksonville small business owners should have their bank statements, receipts, profit and loss statements, and any other relevant financial records. We can’t stress the importance of proper documentation enough: once your taxes are filed, that’s it. So, do a well-rounded check of the previous year’s income, loss, and potential deductibles to ensure you have everything you need to make your 2025 tax filings go as smoothly as possible. 2.   Double-Check Personal Information Believe it or not, one of the most common mistakes individuals and small business owners in Florida make when filing their taxes is incorrect personal information. Ensure that your name, social security number, and other personal details are accurately entered when you file your taxes. Even the smallest typo can lead to significant delays in processing your Florida tax return. 3.   Understand Deductions and Credits It can be overwhelming, but taking the time to understand which credits and deductions you’re eligible for can greatly benefit both individual tax filers and small business owners in Jacksonville. For individuals, common tax deductions include mortgage interest, student loan interest, and medical expenses. Jacksonville small business owners can benefit from deductions on expenses such as office supplies, travel, and employee salaries. Missing out on these crucial deductions and credits can mean paying higher taxes than necessary. 4.   Keep Detailed Records Maintaining organized and detailed records throughout the year can greatly assist in ensuring a smooth tax filing process when the time comes. This is especially crucial for Florida small businesses, where tracking expenses and income accurately is imperative. Good record-keeping habits can also protect you in the case of a tax audit. 5.   Stay Updated on Florida Tax Laws Tax laws in Florida change frequently, so it’s essential to stay informed about any updates that may affect your tax filing. Likewise, signing up for Brock CPA’s monthly e-newsletter can help keep individuals and small businesses in Florida up-to-date on changes, as well as getting our insider tips and tricks to facing tax season head on. Individuals and small business owners in Florida can avoid penalties by filing by the tax deadline, which this year lands on April 15th, 2025. If you need more time, you can consider filing an extension. Just remember, an extension only gives you more time to file, not to pay any taxes owed. 7.   Seek Professional Help Whether your tax situation is simple or complex, don’t hesitate to reach out to the tax professionals at Brock CPA in Jacksonville, Florida. Businesses can better their chances of significant savings and position themselves in a stronger financial position in 2025 by implementing strategic tax planning at the end of the fiscal year. Brock CPA is a full-service accounting firm in Jacksonville, Florida specializing in supporting local business growth and financial optimization. On our blog this month, we’re going to talk through practical tax strategies that Jacksonville businesses can implement at the end of the year to set themselves up for success in 2025. Let’s go! Maximizing Deductions Make sure you’re taking advantage of all of the available deductions, like those for business-related travel, meals, and entertainment. These deductions often add up and account for more than you might anticipate. It’s always a good idea to review your expenses and see if there are any additional deductions you can make to benefit your business come 2025. Utilizing Tax Credits Likewise, look for any available tax credits that your business might qualify for, such as energy efficiency credits, or credits for hiring certain employees. Taking advantage of the credits and deductions available to you could greatly impact your tax planning in 2025. Deferring Income If possible, try deferring some of that end-of-the-year income until 2025. This can help reduce your taxable income for 2024, and could potentially lower your tax liability. Accelerating Expenses Prepaying for expenses like rent, utilities, and supplies before the end of the year can help Jacksonville businesses take advantage of deductions in the current tax year. This is a helpful workaround for businesses that need a bit more wiggle room when it comes to their deductions. Reviewing Inventory Review your current inventory to see if there is any excess stock that you can sell at the end of the year at a discount. Not only does this help reduce your taxable income, it also frees up storage space, a win-win! Investing in Equipment Psst, we have two words: depreciation deductions. Purchasing new equipment or technology for your Jacksonville business at the end of the year instead of at the beginning can provide tax benefits through depreciation deductions, while also improving your business operations. Contributing to Retirement Plans Contributing to retirement plans like 401(k)s or IRAs can reduce your taxable business income, especially if you maximize your contributions before the year ends. The bill presents $1.07 billion in tax relief for Florida families, bringing the total savings to $1.5 billion for fiscal year 24- 25. House Bill 7073 also notably adopts the current Internal Revenue Code (IRC), finally in alignment with federal tax regulations. As Jacksonville’s leading certified public accounting firm, Brock CPA is excited to see how these changes can positively impact our clients in the near future. In this blog, we’re going to discuss some of the most noteworthy changes in the omnibus tax bill, and how it affects you.   Automatic Due Date Extension The new omnibus tax bill enacts automatic due date extensions for corporate income tax and sales tax in the event of federally declared states of emergencies or disasters. These due date extensions will provide significant relief for businesses during times of turbulent weather climate, something as Floridians we are all too familiar with. It’s a convenient measure considering the fiscal impacts the COVID-19 pandemic had on businesses across the country just 4 years ago.  The measure applies to taxpayers during any taxable year that a disaster or emergency takes place, and is automatically extended to 15 days for corporate income tax, and 10 days for sales tax.   Unique Abilities Tax Credit Florida businesses employing individuals with a disability, as defined by statute, could be eligible for a tax credit of up to $1,000 per employee. The credit equals one dollar for each hour the employee works during the taxable year and is capped at 1,000 hours. The tax credit is applicable to individuals who have been employed for at least 6 months, and applies to taxable years beginning on January 1, 2024. The max amount of tax credits to be granted is $5 million over the next three years. The program encourages Florida companies to make diverse hires, which allows our communities to remain tolerant and welcoming of all unique individuals.   Sales Tax Provisions Within House Bill 7073, there are several sales tax holidays that should have Florida taxpayers rejoice. Parents and care providers can enjoy tax-free purchases for back-to-school items from July 29 - August 11, 2024, while recreational items and certain admissions are tax-free during “Freedom Month” which takes place July 1 - 31, 2024. Perhaps the one that applies to every Floridian across the states in some way or another, the “Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday” was from June 1 - 14, 2024 and takes place again from August 24 - September 6, 2024, providing - you guessed it - tax-free purchases of disaster preparedness items. From September 1 - 7, 2024, skilled workers can enjoy purchasing their required tools at a tax-free rate as well.   These are just a few of our favorite key points within the new omnibus tax bill, there are a plethora of excellent reforms outlined in the complete bill that we are excited to see in effect for our community and the families and businesses we work with. Owning a home offers stability, potential for appreciation, and a variety of tax benefits that can ease the financial burden. At Brock CPA, we're here to help Florida homeowners navigate the ever-changing tax landscape and maximize their deductions and credits in 2024.   Why Homeownership Makes Sense in Florida Despite recent market fluctuations, Florida's housing market exhibits resilience. According to the Florida Realtors® https://www.floridarealtors.org/tools-research/reports/florida-market-reports, median sale prices are expected to remain steady in 2024, offering predictability for homebuyers. Additionally, Florida's lack of state income tax makes it an attractive location for homeowners looking to keep more of their hard-earned money. Owning a home also fosters a sense of community and allows you to personalize your living space. Long-term, homeownership can contribute to financial security as the property value potentially appreciates, building wealth over time.   Tax Advantages of Homeownership in Florida Florida homeowners hold a distinct advantage: the Homestead Exemption. This exemption significantly reduces the taxable value of your primary residence, translating to lower property taxes. According to the Florida Department of Revenue https://floridarevenue.com/property/Pages/Taxpayers_Exemptions.aspx, the exemption can be as high as $50,000, offering substantial savings.   Federal Tax Deductions for Homeowners Beyond the state level, homeowners across the U.S. can benefit from various federal tax deductions in 2024: Mortgage Interest Deduction: A portion of the interest paid on your mortgage loan can be deducted from your taxable income. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 limits this deduction to the interest paid on mortgages up to $750,000 for new loans issued after December 15th, 2017, and $1,000,000 for loans issued before that date https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-publication-936. Mortgage Points Deduction: Points, which are upfront fees paid to secure a lower interest rate, can be deducted in the year they are paid if certain criteria are met https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-publication-936. Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI) Deduction: If you have a conventional loan with a loan-to-value ratio exceeding 80%, you may be able to deduct the PMI premiums you pay on your federal tax return https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-publication-936.   Important Note: Tax laws can be complex, and eligibility for deductions can change. It's crucial to consult with a qualified tax professional at Brock CPA to determine which deductions apply to your specific situation. Tax Credits Available to Florida Homeowners While deductions lower your taxable income, tax credits directly reduce the amount of tax you owe. Here are some more potential tax credits for Florida homeowners in 2024: Residential Property Insurance Premium Tax Credit (New in 2024!): Florida recently passed a bill offering a one-year tax credit for the cost of residential property insurance premiums https://www.flsenate.gov/Media/PressRelease/Show/4541. This credit applies to policies written between October 1, 2024, and September 30, 2025. Be sure to stay updated on the official application process for this new credit. Energy Efficiency Tax Credits: The federal government offers tax credits for homeowners who install energy-efficient improvements in their homes. These credits can help offset the cost of upgrades like new insulation, high-efficiency windows, or solar panels https://www.energystar.gov/about/federal-tax-credits.   Additional Considerations for Florida Homeowners Save Your Receipts: Keeping detailed records of homeownership expenses like mortgage interest, property taxes, and home improvement costs is crucial for claiming deductions and credits. Consult a Tax Professional: Tax laws can be intricate, and Brock CPA's experienced team can help you maximize your deductions and credits while ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.   Owning a home in Florida is a significant financial decision. However, with its long-term value proposition, potential for appreciation, and various tax benefits, it can be a rewarding investment. By understanding and utilizing the available deductions and credits, you can significantly reduce your tax burden and make homeownership in Florida even more advantageous. Contact Brock CPA today to schedule a consultation and ensure you're taking full advantage of all the tax benefits available to you.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] ### Understanding the 2024 Tax Brackets and Inflation Adjustments [vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading source="post_title" font_container="tag:h1|text_align:left" google_fonts="font_family:Montserrat%3Aregular%2C700|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal"][vc_column_text]What are the Differences Between the 2023 and 2024 Tax Brackets? Tax season can be a daunting time, and navigating the ever-changing world of tax brackets and deductions can feel like deciphering an ancient code. For those filing their 2023 taxes this year (due April 15, 2024!), and planning for 2024 filings, understanding the adjustments made for inflation is crucial. So, take a deep breath, grab your coffee, and let's explore the key differences between the 2023 and 2024 tax brackets. Hold My Bracket: Tax Rates Remain the Same, But Thresholds Shift First things first: the good news! The tax rates themselves haven't changed for either 2023 or 2024. That means you'll still see the familiar progression from 10% to 37% depending on your filing status and taxable income. However, to account for recent high inflation and prevent "bracket creep" (paying a higher tax rate due to cost-of-living increases, not actual income growth), the bracket thresholds have been adjusted upwards for 2024. This means you'll need to earn more money to fall into the same tax bracket as in 2023. Breaking Down the Increases: The table below illustrates the changes:[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Filing Status 2023 Thresholds 2024 Thresholds Increase Single $215,950 - $539,900 $231,700 - $563,050 $31,100 Married Filing Jointly $539,900 - $647,850 $563,050 - $678,650 $15,600 Head of Household $539,900 - $647,850 $563,050 - $678,650 $15,600 Married Filing Separately $131,300 - $157,500 $137,050 - $160,750 $3,700 Single $539,900 and above $563,050 and above $23,150 Married Filing Jointly $647,850 and above $678,650 and above $30,800 Head of Household $647,850 and above $678,650 and above $30,800 Married Filing Separately $157,500 and above $160,750 and above $3,250 [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]As you can see, the increases vary depending on your filing status, but generally range from $1,475 to $4,275. This means you could potentially fall into a lower tax bracket in 2024, even if your income increased slightly to keep up with inflation. Beyond the Brackets: Other Adjustments to Know About While the tax brackets are a major focus, keep in mind that other adjustments impact your overall tax liability: Standard Deduction: The IRS also raised the standard deduction for 2024, which effectively reduces your taxable income. For single taxpayers and married filing separately, it increases to $14,600, while it climbs to $29,200 for married filing jointly and $21,900 for heads of household. Other Tax Credits and Deductions: Be sure to explore other tax breaks that might apply to you, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, student loan interest deduction, and charitable contributions deduction. These can further lower your tax bill. Consult a Tax Professional to Maximize Your Tax Benefits Tax laws are continually evolving and can be complex. For many, if not most circumstances, seeking professional tax advice can ensure that you maximize your tax benefits, and navigate the intricacies of the tax code efficiently. This strategic approach allows donors to not only contribute to causes close to their hearts but also to optimize their own financial benefits. In this article, we'll touch on a couple of quick points about tax-smart charitable giving, shedding light on deductions for charitable donations, the advantages of donating appreciated assets, and the diverse landscape of local charitable initiatives in Jacksonville you may wish to consider supporting. Maximize Your Tax Benefits With Charitable Donations One of the compelling advantages of charitable giving lies in the potential tax benefits that donors can accrue. Understanding the tax implications of charitable donations is crucial for individuals and businesses alike. In Northeast Florida, donors who itemize deductions on their state and federal taxes can typically claim deductions for qualifying charitable contributions, reducing their taxable income. Unlock Additional Advantages by Donating Appreciated Assets While many may associate charitable giving with cash donations, there's also a lesser-known avenue that can yield significant benefits: donating appreciated assets. Stocks, real estate or other investments that have gained value over time can be powerful tools for philanthropy. By directly contributing these assets to a qualified charity, donors may be eligible for a charitable deduction based on the asset's fair market value, all while avoiding capital gains taxes. Consider this scenario: Instead of selling a stock that has appreciated substantially, which would trigger capital gains taxes, donors can donate the stock directly to a charitable organization. This not only supports the chosen cause but also offers a tax-efficient alternative by sidestepping capital gains taxes on the appreciation. Local Charitable Initiatives: A Wealth of Opportunities Greater Jacksonville and Northeast Florida boast a diverse array of charitable initiatives, catering to a wide range of causes. These include organizations working to reduce homelessness, those serving women, children and families, underserved communities, veterans, pets, nature and the environment, healthcare and so much more! You can explore your opportunities on platforms such as Great Nonprofits and Nonprofit List. These resources provide comprehensive listings of nonprofit organizations in Jacksonville, enabling readers to discover causes aligned with their values and interests. Navigating the Landscape with Expert Counsel As you embark on your tax-smart charitable giving journey, remember that seeking professional advice is always a wise move. Navigating the nuances of tax policies requires knowledge of local, state and Federal tax regulations. Consulting with a tax professional can ensure that you optimize the value of your contributions while also staying compliant with applicable laws. By taking a strategic approach to philanthropy, you can make a lasting impact on your community while maximizing your financial benefits. From all of us here at Brock CPA, we hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends! We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to serve you during this special time of year, and every other. Contact us at Brock CPA if there is any way that we can assist you. ### Holiday Bonus Strategies for Jacksonville Employers and Employees The Types of Year-End Bonuses Before we explore tax implications, it's important to recognize the different types of year-end bonuses that Jacksonville employers may want to consider: Cash Bonuses: These are the most common form of bonuses and are typically subject to withholding taxes. Employees usually receive the net amount after tax deductions. Gift Cards or Non-Cash Gifts: Non-monetary bonuses like gift cards or gifts can be a tax-efficient way to reward employees. These are often considered de minimis fringe benefits and can be tax-free for both employers and employees if their value is below a certain threshold. Performance-Based Bonuses: These bonuses are tied to an employee's performance and can be a great incentive to motivate your workforce. Holiday Parties: Hosting a holiday party for your employees can be considered a tax-deductible expense for your business. While not a cash bonus, it's a way to show appreciation without tax consequences for employees. Profit Sharing and 401(k) Contributions: Some Jacksonville businesses offer profit-sharing bonuses or contributions to employees' retirement accounts, which can have tax advantages. Tax Implications for Jacksonville Employers For Jacksonville employers, understanding the tax implications of different bonus strategies is crucial to make informed decisions. Here's a closer look at how these bonuses are taxed: Cash Bonuses: When giving cash bonuses, employers must withhold federal and state income taxes. These bonuses are subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes as well. Gift Cards or Non-Cash Gifts: As mentioned earlier, these are often considered de minimis fringe benefits and can be tax-free for both employers and employees if they meet certain criteria. The IRS has previously ruled that items with a value exceeding $100 could not be considered de minimis, even under unusual circumstances. Performance-Based Bonuses: Performance-based bonuses can be a tax-efficient way to reward employees, especially key employees. These bonuses are typically taxed just like regular income. Holiday Parties: Hosting a holiday party can be a deductible business expense. As long as it's not excessively extravagant, the cost of the party is usually 100% tax-deductible for your Jacksonville business. Be aware that inviting business associates will affect your ability to deduct the total cost of the party. Due to the meals and entertainment limitation, you can only deduct 50% of the costs from non-employees at a non-business party. Profit Sharing and 401(k) Contributions: Contributions to retirement accounts can provide tax advantages for your business. They're tax-deductible for the employer, and employees benefit from tax-deferred growth in their retirement savings. Tax Implications for Jacksonville Employees Employees in Jacksonville receiving year-end bonuses also need to be aware of the tax implications to ensure they don't encounter unexpected tax bills: Cash Bonuses: Cash bonuses are subject to federal and state income tax, Social Security, and Medicare taxes. Employees may have the option to adjust their withholding to offset the tax impact. Gift Cards or Non-Cash Gifts: Non-monetary gifts are typically tax-free for employees if their value is below the IRS threshold for de minimis fringe benefits. It is essential for both employers and employees to keep track of these benefits and their values. Performance-Based Bonuses: Again, these are taxed like regular income, meaning that employees should be prepared for potential increases in their overall tax liability. Profit Sharing and 401(k) Contributions: Contributions to retirement accounts offer tax benefits to employees, a these contributions can continue to grow tax-deferred indefinitely, until withdrawal. Taking your time and preparing as early as possible can save you a ton of headaches and alleviate that rushed feeling to submit your taxes by April 15th. Less room for error and, a bigger refund on your end. Let’s get into it! Gather Your Tax Documents First things first, you’ll need to gather the social security numbers of you and your dependents as well as the W-2 that you’ll receive from your place of work by January 31st. Keeping this information somewhere safe and handy is always a good idea. Next, you may receive special 1099 forms for a variety of reasons: unemployment compensation, pension, or retirement plan distributions to name a few. There are also forms like 1099-K and 1099-MISC for those working in the gig economy, and 1099-INT if you were paid interest at any point during the fiscal year. Gather and organize, you won’t regret it! Look Into Deductions and Credits Every year the standard deduction is adjusted for inflation, in 2024 the projected standard deduction is $14,600 for single filers, $29,900 for spouses filing jointly, and $21,900 for heads of households. If you’re wondering whether you should file standard or itemized, the larger figure always wins. However, it’s always best to take your time, weigh your options and choose the route that will yield the biggest tax break. Check Your Withholding Ensuring you’re withholding enough taxes each year can truly make a difference in the amount you’re receiving or contributing by the time tax season rolls around. If you owed taxes or received a large refund when you filed, this may be a sign you need to adjust your withholding. The IRS provides this handy Tax Withholding Calculator, you’ll need yours and your spouse’s pay stubs, other income documentation, and your most recent tax return. Max Your Contributions If you’re looking for a way to reduce your taxable income this season and have extra money to invest, you can consider increasing your IRA and HSA contributions. Paying a little more each month can significantly reduce the amount of taxes you pay. Maximum contribution amounts are $6,000 towards IRA and $3,650 for individuals towards HSA. Consider Hiring a Pro At the end of the day, hiring an expert CPA to help you navigate the murky waters that are taxes can be the best first step to preparing for tax season. Tax professionals can even help you secure a larger refund and of course help you identify IRS audit triggers. Navigating the intricate world of tax regulations can be a challenging task for many business owners, and mistakes in this realm can have significant consequences. Let's dive in! Inaccurate Recordkeeping: One of the most common reasons small businesses run into tax troubles is poor recordkeeping. Failing to maintain accurate financial records can lead to incorrect reporting, overlooked deductions, and potential IRS audits. It's crucial to establish a reliable system for organizing and categorizing all financial transactions, including income, expenses, and receipts. Consider using accounting software or hiring a professional bookkeeper or business advisor to ensure your records are meticulous and up-to-date. Misclassifying Workers: Classifying workers as “employees” or “independent contractors” can be a complex task, but it's essential to get it right. The same is true for how business owners categorize and report on their remote workforce and remain compliant with the specific requirements of the state where their business is based. Misclassifying workers in any regard can result in penalties, back taxes, and even legal disputes. Understand all criteria set by the IRS for determining worker classification and seek professional advice if you are unsure. Taking the time to properly classify your workers from the start can save you from future headaches and potential financial setbacks. Overlooking Tax Deductions and Credits: Small businesses often miss out on valuable deductions and credits that can significantly reduce their tax liability. It's essential to stay informed about available tax breaks and credits specific to your industry. Common deductions include business-related expenses like rent, utilities, supplies, and marketing costs. Additionally, be sure to explore credits such as the Research and Development (R&D) credit (pdf) or the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit. Familiarize yourself with these opportunities and consult with a tax professional to maximize your tax savings. Failure to Separate Personal and Business Expenses: Blurring the lines between personal and business expenses is a common mistake made by small business owners. Mixing personal and business finances not only creates confusion but can also raise red flags during tax audits. To avoid this pitfall, establish separate bank accounts and credit cards exclusively for business purposes. Keep meticulous records of all business-related expenses, ensuring they are legitimate and necessary for your operations. Maintaining clear separation will not only simplify tax preparation but also demonstrate the professionalism of your business to the IRS. Missing Deadlines and Filing Errors: Missing tax deadlines and making filing errors can have serious consequences. Late filings can result in penalties and interest charges, putting unnecessary strain on your business's finances. To stay on top of deadlines, mark important dates on your calendar and establish a system of reminders. Double-check all tax forms for accuracy, ensuring that you've entered the correct information. Consider utilizing tax software or seeking professional assistance to minimize the risk of errors and ensure timely and accurate filings. By being aware of these common tax mistakes and taking proactive measures to avoid them, small businesses can alleviate tax-related stress and position themselves for financial success. Florida has a unique set of rules and regulations that govern how sales tax should be collected, reported, and remitted. Understanding these requirements is essential for e-commerce businesses to avoid penalties and fines. As a trusted local CPA firm based in Jacksonville, FL for many years, our team at Brock CPA knows from experience that diligent, forward-thinking tax planning, preparation and compliance is the best possible way to limit your present and future tax liabilities, and this applies to e-commerce businesses with a presence in the Sunshine State. What is sales tax? Sales tax is a tax levied by state and local governments on the sale of goods and services. This tax is usually paid by the buyer at the point of sale and is collected by the seller. The sales tax rate varies depending on both the location of the business and the type of product or service being sold. For example, in Florida, sales of food and prescription drugs are not subject to sales tax, and some counties and municipalities add an additional local sales tax. Florida’s general sales tax rate is 6%, but the city of Miami has a local sales tax rate of 7.5%. Do e-commerce businesses need to collect sales tax in Florida? Yes. All sales of taxable tangible personal property made online are subject to tax when the merchandise is delivered to a customer located in Florida. If the seller is registered as a Florida dealer, the seller should collect Florida sales tax. Sales tax requirements for e-commerce businesses To comply with the requirements, e-commerce businesses must register with the Florida Department of Revenue and obtain a sales tax permit. You can do this online at the Department of Revenue's website. During the registration process, you will need to provide information about your business, including your business name, address, and federal tax ID number. Once you receive a certificate of registration, you should display at your place of business or include it on your e-commerce website. You must also begin collecting sales tax from customers and remitting the tax to the state. Because rates vary depending on the location of the business and the type of product or service being sold, e-commerce businesses must determine the correct sales tax rate for each transaction based on the location of the customer. This can be challenging for businesses that sell products or services to customers in multiple states, as each state has its own sales tax rate. The state of Florida offers a sales tax rate lookup tool that e-commerce businesses can use to determine the correct sales tax rate for each transaction. This tool allows businesses to enter the customer's address and the type of product or service being sold to determine the correct sales tax rate. E-commerce businesses must also file sales tax returns with the Florida Department of Revenue. Sales tax returns are due monthly, quarterly, or annually, depending on the amount of sales tax collected. If you collect less than $1,000 in sales tax per year, you are required to file an annual return. If you collect between $1,000 and $12,000 in sales tax per year, you are required to file a quarterly return. If you collect more than $12,000 in sales tax per year, you are required to file a monthly return. E-commerce businesses must report the total amount of sales, the total amount of sales tax collected, and any exemptions or deductions that apply. Sales tax exemptions and deductions Certain products and services may be exempt from sales tax in Florida. For example, groceries, prescription drugs, and medical equipment are exempt from sales tax. E-commerce businesses that sell these types of products must obtain a sales tax exemption certificate from the customer to exempt the sale from sales tax. E-commerce businesses may also be eligible for sales tax deductions. For example, businesses may deduct the cost of materials used to manufacture a product from the sales price before calculating the sales tax owed. This reduces the amount of sales tax owed and can help businesses save money. Penalties and fines for non-compliance E-commerce businesses that fail to comply with sales tax requirements in Florida may be subject to penalties and fines. The Florida Department of Revenue may assess a penalty of 10% of the amount of tax due or $50, whichever is greater, for each month that the return is late. The department may also assess a penalty of 10% of the tax due for each transaction that was not properly reported or for each transaction for which sales tax was not collected. In addition to penalties and fines, e-commerce businesses that fail to comply with sales tax requirements may also be subject to audits by the Florida Department of Revenue. Audits can be time-consuming and costly, and businesses may be required to pay back taxes and penalties if they are found to be non-compliant. Tips for staying compliant with sales tax requirements in Florida Keep detailed records of all sales made and the amount of sales tax collected. This includes both online and offline sales. Be aware of the local sales tax rates that may apply to your business and ensure that you are collecting sales tax at the correct rate. File a sales tax return with the Florida Department of Revenue on a monthly or quarterly basis. Remit payment on time to avoid penalties and interest charges. Consider using a third-party service provider to help you automate the process of collecting and remitting sales tax. If you have any questions about sales tax requirements in Florida, consult with your CPA or contact the Florida Department of Revenue. Stay up-to-date with any changes to Florida's sales tax laws. With remote work more common, small businesses are beginning to face new tax challenges. In this blog post, we’ll explore the impact of remote work on small business taxes.   First, it’s important to understand the definition of remote work. Remote work refers to work that is done outside of a traditional office setting, usually from home or a location outside of the employer’s physical office. Remote work can be full-time or part-time and can be done by employees or independent contractors.   Nexus and Sales Tax One of the most significant impacts of remote work on small business taxes is the question of nexus. Nexus refers to the connection between a business and a state that allows the state to impose tax obligations on the business. Typically, a business has nexus in a state if it has a physical presence, such as an office or employees, in that state. However, with remote work, employees may be working from different states, potentially creating nexus in those states.   This can create a tax headache for small businesses. If a business has nexus in a state, it may be required to register with the state’s tax authority, collect and remit sales tax, and file income tax returns. This can be a complicated and time-consuming process, especially for small businesses that don’t have a dedicated tax department.   To make matters more complicated, different states have different rules for determining nexus. For example, some states may have a “factor presence” test that looks at the amount of sales or revenue a business generates in the state, while others may have a “click-through” nexus rule that applies if a business has affiliates or referral partners in the state.   Employment Taxes for Remote Workers Small businesses may also face challenges when it comes to employment taxes for remote workers. Employers are typically required to withhold state and local taxes from employee paychecks based on where the employee works. If a remote worker lives in a different state than the employer, the employer may need to register with that state’s tax authority and withhold taxes for that state.   Here in Florida, where Brock CPA is based, we are one of nine states that do not have a state income tax. This is great news for small businesses that operate in our state. However, as noted above, if you have employees who live in other states where there is an income tax, you may be required to withhold state income tax for those employees. This can be a complex process, as each state has its own rules and regulations regarding income tax withholding.   To determine if you need to withhold state income tax for your remote workers, you'll need to consider several factors, including the employee's state of residence, the amount of income earned, and any reciprocity agreements between Florida and the employee's state of residence.   Reciprocity Agreements Reciprocity agreements are agreements between states that allow employees who live in one state and work in another to pay income tax only in their state of residence. Florida has reciprocity agreements with only two states: Alabama and Georgia. If your remote workers live in either of these states, you may be able to avoid withholding state income tax for them.   However, if your remote workers live in a state that does not have a reciprocity agreement with Florida, you'll need to withhold state income tax for them. You may also need to register with that state's tax authority and file state income tax returns.   Home Office Deduction Another potential tax issue for small businesses is the home office deduction. If an employee works remotely from a home office, the employer may be able to take a deduction for expenses related to that home office. However, there are strict requirements for taking this deduction, and it can be challenging for small businesses to navigate the rules.   Remote Work Benefits Deduction Finally, small businesses may need to consider the tax implications of providing remote work benefits, such as equipment or internet access. In some cases, these benefits may be considered taxable income for the employee, which could create additional tax obligations for the employer.   Navigating Remote Work Tax Challenges So, what can small businesses do to navigate these tax challenges? One option is to work with a CPA or tax professional who has experience with remote work. A tax professional can help small businesses understand their tax obligations and ensure that they are complying with all applicable laws and regulations.   Small businesses can also consider implementing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with tax laws. For example, businesses can require remote workers to track their hours and report their work location, which can help with determining nexus and employment tax obligations.   Additionally, small businesses may want to consider using software or other tools to help with tax compliance. There are a variety of tax software options available, many of which are designed specifically for small businesses.   To summarize, remote work has significant tax implications for small businesses. From the question of nexus to employment taxes, benefits and home office deductions, small businesses need to be aware of the potential tax issues and take steps to ensure compliance with tax laws. By working with experienced tax professionals, implementing policies and procedures, and/or potentially using tax software, small businesses can successfully navigate the tax challenges of remote work.   If you need assistance with tax planning and preparation, contact Brock CPA. In today's digital age, online reviews have become a critical component of any business's reputation. They serve as a source of information for prospective clients who are researching companies and play a major role in shaping customer behavior, helping to drive new business. Perhaps even more importantly, they provide valuable feedback and insights that help us understand what we are doing well and where we can improve. For these reasons, we encourage you to pursue reviews for your own business and would greatly appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to write a review about your experience with Brock CPA! Your feedback would mean a lot to us and would help others make informed decisions about their business advisory, accounting and tax planning needs. ### Ready to Ring in the New Year? Take Time to Talk Taxes First [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]As 2022 comes to an end, it’s important to take a close look at your financial picture and evaluate any adjustments that might be made before the end of the year to potentially lesson your tax burden. Here are a few areas of opportunity to consider. Maximize Retirement Contributions When it comes to funding your retirement, people 50 and over are allowed to make pre-tax contributions to a 401(k) of up to $27,000 per year and people under 50 can contribute up to $20,500. As it relates to Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), the maximum yearly contribution for people aged 50 and over is $7,000 and the contribution limit is $6,000 for everyone else. Both types of retirement funds support your long-term financial health and provide tax advantages. If you don’t currently have an IRA, there is still time to open an account and contribute your maximum amount before the end of the year. Take Stock of your Stock Options Stock options are a valuable perk provided by many companies. However, it’s important to recognize that exercising your stock options does have tax implications. Now is the time to decide if you want to sell the options, knowing that a capital gain or loss will likely occur, and this will affect your tax filing. Estimate Real and Potential Capital Gains and Losses Taking the time to estimate your real and potential capital gains and losses is particularly important before the end of the year. Selling securities or other assets before December 31st will allow you to realize the associated capital gain or loss in the 2022 tax year. Your tax professional or financial advisor can help you make the determination as to the benefit of selling before year-end. It’s important to note that capital gains can potentially change your tax bracket. Evaluate your Health & Flexible Spending Accounts if You Have Them Be aware that funds in a Health Spending Account (HSA) automatically carry over to the next year. Conversely, when it comes to your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) you’ll forfeit the unused funds as of December 31st, so it is important to check you balance as soon as possible. You Can Count on Us. These are just a few of the items that should be evaluated before the end of the year. The team at Brock CPA is here to help you ensure you maximize your financial options. Please reach out with any questions or concerns regarding your accounting and tax needs by calling 904-330-0268 or emailing dbrock@brockcpa.com.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] ### The Season of Giving: Understanding Charitable Gift Deductions [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] The Season of Giving: Understanding Charitable Gift Deductions The holiday season is a time when many people take an opportunity to give. Whether it’s to your church, an education-related Foundation or other charitable organization, so long as the organization has tax-exempt status, your gift can qualify for tax benefits. What Types of Organizations Qualify as Charitable? If you’re unsure what type of organizations qualify, note that non-profit eligible entities typically operate for religious, scientific, poverty mitigation or educational purposes, and/or have a purpose to prevent cruelty of protected or vulnerable groups. The IRS provides a search tool to help verify an organization’s tax-exempt status and determine its eligibility for deductible contributions. (Remember, gifts that benefit a particular individual, business or private interests do not qualify as deductible contributions.) Changes to Charitable Giving Deductions Last year, the IRS temporarily allowed individuals to deduct $300 per person (up to $600 for married filing jointly) without itemizing other deductions. Unfortunately, in 2022, charitable contributions can only be deducted if you itemize expenses on Schedule A of your tax return. For that to make sense, all your itemized expenses must exceed the standard deduction. Additionally, other charitable contribution deduction provisions made as part of COVID relief in the 2020 and 2021 tax years are no longer available. Specifically, the deduction for cash contributions to public charities is no longer up to 100% of adjusted gross income for people who itemize. The 2022 rules have reverted back to allowing no more than 60% of your adjusted gross income for cash contributions to most public charities, and the limit is 30% for non-cash donations. What Type of Documentation is Needed? For cash contributions, you’ll need the name of the organization and the donation amount; a bank or credit card statement that illustrates the amount of the contribution and the date of the donation; and for gifts over $250, a receipt from the charitable organization is also required. Plan Ahead In addition to documenting the charitable donations you have made this year and working with your tax advisor to determine whether the using standard deduction, or itemizing deductions will be the best option for your 2022 tax return, it’s important to plan ahead. Start thinking now about your charitable contribution goals and associated tax implications for 2023. Make sure you know what tax bracket you’ll fall into next year, if you plan to file individually or jointly, the associated deduction limits, and the types of assets you can donate. We are Here to Help. The team at Brock CPA is here to help you better understand the latest rules on allowable deductions for charitable donations of cash and property as well as potential carryover opportunities. As always, we encourage you to reach out with any questions or concerns regarding your accounting and tax needs by calling 904-330-0268 or emailing dbrock@brockcpa.com.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] ### How to Lessen the Chances of an Audit [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] How to Lessen the Chances of an Audit As most know, President Joe Biden recently signed the Inflation Reduction Act into law. In doing so, he authorized $80 billion in funding for the Internal Revenue Service over the next 10 years. The law calls for the funding of 87,000 new IRS agents. Part of this is to replenish an aging, shrinking workforce and revitalize the agency to be able to process more returns on time and provide better overall service. However, $45 billion is specifically earmarked for enforcement to close the estimated $600 billion “tax gap”, or the difference between what Americans owe and what they actually pay. Part of this effort is to include more audits.   While all agree that the absolute number of audits will rise, administration officials have intimated that the share of people being audited will likely be the same for households earning less than $400,000 per year. Although some question the veracity of this threshold, one thing is certain – that many individuals and small business owners with closely held businesses that generate more than this amount in annual revenue will face a higher likelihood of an audit than in years past.   As a result, you will want to protect yourself as best as possible. While nothing is guaranteed, there are some practical steps you can take to lessen your exposure to an audit. Most important is avoiding the types of common mistakes that are most often flagged by IRS computers:   These include: Filing and/or paying late Leaving questions blank Not reporting all income reported to the IRS by others Showing nonpassive involvement when you are a passive investor Reporting under incorrect Tax ID numbers Numbers in your return conflicting with documents submitted by others Materially overstating charitable donations and automobile expenses Reporting a side business loss too many years in a row Reporting unusually large deductions (such as business expenses) as compared with prior years Not being specific about deductions Claiming losses from a business activity that the IRS views as a hobby Using the same annual figures repeatedly Using all perfectly round numbers   Finally, always use a good professional CPA to help you with your tax preparation and answer any questions you may have about federal or state tax issues. At Brock CPA, we nourish long-term, consultative client relationships, so that we have a full, accurate understanding of our clients’ businesses at all times, and can step in to assist at any time. If you find yourself the subject of an audit, we can assist with our tax resolution services which include tax problem resolution for businesses and individuals, and representation before the IRS and state tax authorities. Contact us at (904) 330-0268 or dbrock@brockcpa.com for assistance. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] ### Early Tax Planning Tips to Avoid Surprises [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Early Tax Planning Tips to Avoid Surprises Now that we have entered the second half of the year, there is no better time to get a handle on your taxes to reduce the risk of unexpected surprises for next year’s tax season. Practicing a number of effective mid-year tax planning strategies can not only help you save income taxes, but can also increase your retirement fund, help you manage cash flows, and more. No matter if you typically receive a tax refund or a bill, taking advantage of the extra time in between seasons to review your taxes will help taxpayers become better organized, and provide peace of mind that everything is on track for next year.   Review tax withholdings Typically, whenever you start a new job there is a variety of paperwork to complete – including a Form-W4 that covers how much your employer withholds from your paychecks for federal taxes. It’s important to re-visit those withholdings before each tax season arrives to ensure everything is still up to date, especially after major life changes such as marriage, having children or obtaining a second form of income. The IRS provides a tax withholding estimator online tool to help taxpayers see if they are on track, providing ample time to adjust tax withholdings if necessary. Increase 401K contributions For taxpayers that may have a little more room in their budget, now is also the perfect time to consider reviewing and making changes to monthly 401K contributions. Boosting your pre-tax retirement savings is a great way to reduce your total adjusted gross income. As of 2022, you are able to save $20,500 into your 401K, with an extra $6,500 if you are 50 years or older. No matter what your personal saving goals may be, there is no doubt that they will be easier to obtain by increasing your deferrals now. Weigh Roth IRA conversions As many are aware, the stock market has been significantly down since the beginning of this year. However, some may have a chance to use this to their advantage by saving on Roth individual retirement account conversions. After making non-deductible contributions to pre-tax IRA, you may then convert those funds to a Roth IRA account – ultimately getting ahead on tax-free growth with the trade paying off upfront levies on contributions and earnings. Consider tax-loss harvesting Using losses to offset profits is known as tax-loss harvesting, which is considered another good move for taxpayers to make while the stock market is down. This is achieved by selling declining assets from a brokerage account and using those losses to reduce other gains. Once the losses begin to exceed profits, you are then able to subtract $3,000 per year from regular income.   When it comes to taxes, we believe that there is no better time than right now to make sure you are doing everything possible to limit what you owe for the upcoming tax season. By practicing a few proactive steps throughout the year, businesses and individuals can be more confident that they are ready to go once tax season approaches. We understand that tax season can be an overwhelming time for many, and that it often has a way of sneaking up on you. At Brock CPA, our team of certified tax and accounting professionals are here to ensure our clients a stress-free tax season. If you are ready to get a jumpstart on your taxes, we encourage you to contact our office by calling 904-330-0268 or emailing dbrock@brockcpa.com.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] ### The IRS Updates its “Where’s My Refund?” Online Tool [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] The IRS Updates its “Where’s My Refund?” Online Tool   Last month, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) made enhancements to its “Where’s My Refund?” tool – an online feature that allows taxpayers to check the current status of their returns. In years past, the application only presented the status of the most recently filed tax return within the past two years. However, as the agency continues to endure processing backlogs from 2021, the tool now introduces a new feature that enables taxpayers to check the status of their current tax year along with returns for the two previous years. This upgrade is essential for those who are still waiting for their current tax returns as well as those waiting for returns from the last couple years – which has been a common occurrence due to the IRS’ current processing difficulties in result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, taxpayers can utilize the “Where’s My Refund?” tool to select any of the three most recent tax years (2019, 2020, 2021) to check their refund status after providing their Social Security number or ITIN, filing status, and expected refund amount from their original tax refund for the specific year they are checking. However, it is important to note that information available to those calling the tax refund hotline will be limited to the 2021 tax returns only. Using the application, taxpayers can begin checking status of their return within: 24 hours after e-filing a 2021 tax return 3 to 4 days after e-filing a tax year 2019 or 2020 return 4 weeks after mailing a return   “Where’s My Refund?” is one of the most commonly used online features that the IRS provides and was used approximately 776 million times last year. The online tool is updated daily, providing taxpayers a projected refund issuance date as soon as all received documents have been approved. “We encourage those who expect a refund, but requested an extension, to file as soon as they’re ready. We process returns on a first-in basis, so the sooner the better. There’s really no reason to wait until October 17th if filers have the relevant information to file now” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. The IRS has continued to receive backlash from Congress due to the lengthy backlogs in processing tax returns. Rettig has testified to Congress that the Biden administration’s budget has requested funds for modern technology to help with these ongoing issues, but so far it has not been approved by lawmakers. We understand how important it is for businesses and individuals to receive their tax refunds as promptly as possible. You may recognize the names Bitcoin, Litecoin, Etherum, and Dodgecoin – all forms of cryptocurrencies that have seemingly gained a significant amount of mainstream interest over the past couple years specifically. Some may argue that one of the biggest appeals of using cryptocurrencies is being able to remain anonymous through private and secure transactions. However, this will no longer be the case after December 31st, 2022. Various factors in the world of crypto are evolving quickly, including tax rules. Similar to any investment, there are taxes to take into consideration before determining how much you really made, or lost, on digital credits. New Reporting Requirements for Cryptocurrency As of now, those who are involved with cryptocurrency are responsible for keeping a record of all their transactions – including reporting the taxable transactions to the IRS. Crypto users are asked to indicate whether they received, sold, sent, exchanged, or otherwise acquired any financial gains in any virtual currency during the tax year at the top of their 1040 tax form. Beginning in 2023’s tax year, all potentially taxable digital asset transactions made by cryptocurrency users will be reported to the IRS by outside parties. This is incredibly similar to the third-party reporting that is required when you hold or invest in stocks. Essentially, both you and the agency will get a W-2 form from your employer that reports your annual earnings and a Form 1099 from your broker that reports any stock transactions. In addition, next year businesses must begin reporting whenever they receive more than $10,000 of cryptocurrency in a single transaction in efforts to minimize money laundering.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image="14457" img_size="large" alignment="center"][vc_column_text]Crypto Transactions Will No Longer Be Anonymous While the news that cryptocurrency is here to stay may be great for some, the loss of anonymity also presents an obstacle for those who wish to keep their transactions private, or for those who have not met their tax obligations. Furthermore, until this year it was fairly common to be able to open a digital wallet by simply using a name and email address. Come 2023, it is expected that users will now be asked to provide an array of personal information that was likely not asked in the past. We understand that a number of our clients at Brock CPA may use cryptocurrency platforms for their business or individually. With a number of new changes on the rise for the world of crypto next year, you can rely on our accounting and tax planning professionals to act as knowledgeable guides and help you navigate through any uncertainty. As always, we encourage you to reach out with any questions or concerns regarding your accounting and tax needs by calling 904-330-0268 or emailing dbrock@brockcpa.com.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] ### Years of Neglect have Caused Chaotic Consequences for the IRS [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Years of Neglect have Caused Chaotic Consequences for the IRS The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) geared up for the start of tax filing season this past January, and officials are warning taxpayers and tax professionals that the agency is facing “enormous challenges” due to a number of less-than-ideal conditions. As of December 31st, 2021, the agency had more than 6 million unprocessed individual returns and are currently still dealing with backups in processing returns from the past two filing seasons. As a result, teams of clerks have been working overnight shifts at the IRS processing center in Kansas City, MI, in efforts to clear the significant backlog. Unfortunately, the agency has been dealing with scanners sputter, forcing workers to enter data by hand while piles of tax documents overflow the carts. These subpar conditions have been defined as “chaotic” by a number of workers and officials, reflecting the strain of problems caused by a continuous political and logistical conflicts. American Democrats argue that the long-lasting uproar is proof that the agency needs more funding, while the Republican party argues that the current conditions reveal that the IRS should not be given more money or responsibility. However, the substantial budget cuts over the years can be linked to a large majority of the agency’s ongoing problems today. Along with staffing shortages and outdated technology systems, the continuous effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have kept much of the IRS workforce at home while the agency has spent endless hours sending stimulus checks and other forms of economic relief to millions of Americans across the country. As of today, the IRS has approximately 75,000 workers, which is the same size as it was in 1970. In addition, the number of American taxpayers has increased by 7% and the tax code has grown more complex. With the federal government having to combat large corporations using tax avoidance strategies, along with the recent rise in cryptocurrency, there are numerous transactions that have become much more difficult to tax. While the current agency conditions are extremely unsettling for the workforce, taxpayers, and tax professionals alike, officials are preparing to take the proper steps that will hopefully begin to mend the damage that has progressed over a number of years. In efforts to speed up the backlog of returns, the agency has secured hiring authority from the United States Office of Personnel Management to fill 10,000 positions. Furthermore, the IRS received funding of more than $1 billion as part of Present Biden’s pandemic relief legislation that Congress passed last year to contribute to improving taxpayer services. We understand that many businesses, families and individuals may be overwhelmed about another difficult tax season. At Brock CPA, our tax and accounting experts are here to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have. While it can be easy for businesses to become absorbed by the many responsibilities of running smooth operations on a daily basis, it is always important to set aside the time to prepare for tax filing season to avoid falling behind or missing certain deadlines. Furthermore, businesses should also keep an eye out for yearly changes in taxation to ensure that your returns are completed correctly. Filing tax returns correctly is extremely important for business owners. Read to discover a few reasons why filing your business tax returns correctly and on time will benefit you and your company as a whole. 1. Avoid penalties and prosecution It is important for all business owners to understand the legal repercussions that could follow not filing business tax returns correctly or on time. According to the Income Tax Act, every business is liable to file for taxes that align with the amount of profitable earnings. Neglecting to do so is considered illegal and will result in businesses landing in legal troubles. Additionally, there are also late filing penalties for businesses who fail to submit their tax returns on time. Therefore, the best way to avoid these types of consequences is to plan ahead for tax filing season with the help of a trusted, local CPA firm. 2. Apply for loans As a business owner, it is important to always have ample capital in order to continue to grow and maintain smooth operations. Especially for start-up businesses, receiving business loans is a great way to take the first step in expanding an organization. However, no matter if you are a small business or a large business, receiving some sort of financial help will always offer a number of benefits. With that said, applying for business loans is the best way to gain access to financial assistance for your company. It is important to keep in mind that to apply for a business loan, business owners must submit the most recent income tax return as well as the calculation of income documents to the bank. Therefore, it is essential for businesses to get a head start on this process to ensure all information is ready and accurate if they wish to receive a loan. 3. Carry forward losses  While calculating yearly accounts, businesses who see incurring losses are able to carry forward those losses for the next financial year. This is beneficial for businesses because it can also help to reduce their taxable income and reduce payable tax in the future years. To successfully carry forward losses on yearly tax returns, it is recommended that businesses file their returns within the specified amount of time to avoid any penalties. 4. Claim depreciation Tax depreciation is the depreciation expense claimed by a taxpayer on a tax return to compensate for the loss in the value of tangible assets. Business owners may claim depreciation if they have assets in their name or their business’ name. This is allowed only to the business owner, and the assets must also be used exclusively for business-related purposes. 5. Win government tenders  For construction businesses or contract workers, filing your tax returns on time may reward you with a government tender, or an offer to do work or supply goods at a fixed price. In order to take advantage of this great benefit, businesses must ensure that their tax returns are filed accurately and on time. Therefore, it is more important than ever to begin tax planning and preparations early and avoid any further complications. As federal lawmakers continue to debate potential tax changes for the new year, it is important for all taxpayers to keep an eye on critical developments. However, there are still many steps that taxpayers can take to ensure that they are best prepared for the season. Read to discover 5 tips for better tax planning in Florida. Brief Overview of Florida Taxes For starters, it is important to understand how Florida taxes differ from other state’s taxes. For many years, Florida has had one of the lowest tax burdens in America. Major taxes collected in Florida include sales and use tax, and corporate income taxes – there is no personal income tax in the state of Florida. 1. Gather and organize your tax records Taking the time to organize all of your tax records and documents that you will need to file returns makes the process much easier. This essential preparation step can help individuals avoid making errors or omissions that will cause complications or delay returns. A few examples of documents that taxpayers should have on hand include records of all income received, social security details, a copy of last year’s tax return, and tax deduction documents. 2. Conduct an estimate of what your tax owed / refund will look like Oftentimes, there are many people who do not know what to expect when it comes to filing their tax returns. The approaching tax season may have people wondering if they will be receiving money or owing money. This is why it is smart for individuals to do an early estimate and get a better understanding of what to expect when taxes are submitted so that it makes it easier to plan accordingly. While there are a number of estimating calculators and resources that can be found on the internet, the best way to get the most accurate estimate of your tax bill or refund will be through a professional CPA firm. Once you find the best CPA firm in your area, you will have the opportunity to work with certified tax experts who have the knowledge and expertise to provide conclusive estimates. 3. Remain up to date with tax legislations Tax laws and regulations are constantly changing, and the complexity of tax laws can be overwhelming for many. However, it is extremely important for businesses and individuals to stay informed of these changes in order to file their taxes correctly and on time. The best way to stay updated with the latest and most accurate tax legislation news is to visit IRS.gov or contact a local CPA firm in Florida. 4. Be aware of tax scams and fraud It is not uncommon for people to begin receiving phone calls, emails and text messages around tax season from senders who are claiming to be the IRS. It is important to remember that U.S. mail is the only way that the IRS will communicate with you, and that any other form of attempted communication is a scam. 5. Contact a professional CPA firm for assistance Outsourcing during tax season offers a number of desirable benefits for both individuals and businesses. The best CPA firms will have a vast pool of CPA and accounting specialists who carry years of experience in preparing financial documents and filing tax returns to ensure that your taxes are done accurately and free from errors. Furthermore, with the help of experienced tax professionals, you can remain assured that all of your financial documents and tax records are completed efficiently and on time. Brock, CPA Founder[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] ### Proposed Tax Law Changes for 2022 [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Proposed Tax Law Changes for 2022   What Actions High Net Worth Individuals May Want To Consider In May 2021, the U.S. Treasury Department released its Green Book providing descriptions and explanations of its Fiscal Year 2022 Revenue Proposals. Several of these could dramatically affect tax liabilities for high-net-worth individuals. Here’s what wealthy taxpayers may want to consider, when planning for how to minimize tax impacts for their families and heirs.   Current Federal Gift & Estate Tax Law Under existing federal gift and estate tax law, individuals can give up to $11.7 million (couples, $23.4 million), tax free during life or upon death, without triggering the death tax. This is the highest exemption amount in history. However, it is currently set to decrease significantly in 2026 to approximately $6 million, at which point gifts exceeding this amount will trigger the gift or estate tax for an amount equal to approximately 40% of the value of transferred assets. Currently, lifetime gifts and bequests do not trigger income taxes for recipients, who receive them on a carryover basis, preserving unrealized gains. Assets passed along at death receive a basis step-up to fair market value, essentially wiping out unrealized gains in assets owned. Proposed Changes to Tax Law Affecting Wealthy Individuals in 2022 For 2022, the administration is proposing to increase the top income tax rate for individuals from 37% to 39.6%, applicable to incomes over $452,700 for individuals or $509,300 for joint filers. Brackets will then reset annually, based on inflation. On top of this, the administration is proposing to tax long-term capital gains and qualified dividends at ordinary income rates for those with adjusted gross incomes (AGI) of over $1 million, adding up to another 3.8% net investment income tax, for a top potential rate of 43.4%. Importantly, this change would be considered effective as of April 2021, retroactive from the enactment date. Finally, under the proposed changes, gifts and asset transfers at death would be treated as income realization as if the donor sold the property, realizing any gain or loss; repurchased it; and then gifted identical replacement property. This means that any previous unrealized gains would be passed along to donors who would be responsible for paying income taxes on the gains. This would also apply to property distributed through trusts. These changes would not apply to asset transfers to charities. Every individual could exclude $1 million of “phantom gains” from recognition, and transfers to a living spouse would not immediately trigger gain recognition. Instead, the spouse would assume the assets on a carryover basis with tax liability triggered at the time of their own death or time they gifted it during their life. Although these proposed changes are significant, it is important to understand that we are only at the beginning of what is sure to be a lengthy negotiating process in Congress, with no guarantees. Final outcomes will undoubtedly be affected by the results of negotiations on various other ongoing economic and political matters that are a part of the administration’s policy agenda. Where things ultimately land, no-one can say for certain, at this time. Planning for Tax Law Changes Although these tax law changes are currently only proposed, here are some actions that high net worth taxpayers may want to think about to protect themselves against enactment of these new rules. Consider converting traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs before the end of 2021, while the highest income tax brackets may be lower. Endeavor to keep future annual AGI under $1 million to avoid paying higher rates on long-term capital gains and qualified dividends. If selling assets for non-tax reasons makes sense, it may be wise to do so in 2021 to take advantage of lower long-term capital gain rates. If future transfers at death will result in significant income recognition, then making gifts in 2021 may be appropriate. Individuals may also want to consider moving higher-basis assets into their taxable estates to lessen the impact of gain recognition on transfers at death. The tax planning professionals at Brock CPA stay up to date with ever-changing tax laws and are here to assist you with whatever tax panning needs or issues you may be facing. We encourage you contact us anytime for consultation at 904-330-0268 or by emailing dbrock@brockcpa.com.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row] ### Claiming the 2021 employee retention tax credit (ERTC) [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Claiming the 2021 employee retention tax credit (ERTC) On August 4th, the IRS issued updated guidance on the Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC) (pdf download). This important update made the credit available for employers who paid qualified wages in previous tax quarters from June 30th, 2021 - Dec 31st, 2021, making it now applicable for all four quarters. Although this program is scheduled to end in 2021, businesses will be able to claim the tax credit on amended payroll tax returns three years from the date of filing, per the statute of limitations. The ERTC was created in March 2020 as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES) to encourage businesses to keep employees on their payrolls. The Consolidated Appropriations Act (CAA), created in December 2020 and American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) created in March 2021, extended and expanded the ERTC. The ERTC is for private-sector businesses and non-profit organizations that experienced: A full or partial suspension of operations due to governmental orders limiting commerce due to COVID-19 in 2020 or 2021 A gross receipts decline of more than 50%, or in some cases 20%, during any 2020 or 2021 calendar quarter, as compared to the prior year Under the new guidelines, eligibility was further extended to "recovery startup businesses” launched after Feb. 15, 2020, for which average annual gross receipts did not exceed $1 million, subject to a quarterly ERTC cap of $50,000. How much will this cost me? While Floridians may view this law as controversial, many will be surprised to learn that they will simply be paying tax on something they were supposed to be paying for years.Importantly, under the amended guidelines, for 2021 businesses can receive 70% of the first $10,000 of qualified wages paid by the employer for every employee in each qualifying quarter. The previous credit for Quarters 2-4 in 2020 was 50% of the first $10,000 of qualified wages paid by the employer for every employee. So, the maximum ERC for 2020 would be $5,000 per qualifying quarter, per qualifying employee, while for 2021, it would be $7,000 per qualifying quarter, per qualifying employee ($28,000 per employee for all of 2021). In all cases, employer-paid health benefits can be included as part of the employee’s qualifying wages.  It should be noted that the ERC will apply as a credit against the Medicare tax for the 3rd and 4th quarters of 2021, as opposed to a credit against the Social Security tax, as was the case, previously. “Qualifying wages” are different for small and large employers. For “Small Employers”, it is all wages paid to and Qualified Health Plan Expenses paid for, all employees for each quarter. For “Large Employers”, it is wages paid to and Qualified Health Plan Expenses paid for, employees for a period or periods that the employees did not perform services for the employer. The definitions of small and large employers also changed from 2020 to 2021. In 2020, “Small Employers” were classified as those who averaged 100 or fewer full-time (30 hrs. / wk. or 130 hrs. / mo. Avg.). For 2021, it includes those who averaged 500 or fewer employees. “Large Employers” in 2020 were defined as those with over 100 employees. For 2021, this was expanded to those with over 500 employees. As the U.S. government continues to look for ways to assist businesses affected by the continuing COVID-19 crisis, employers should stay abreast of new programs and amendments that may benefit them. At Brock CPA, we are working to keep our clients advised of such important changes. If you need tax planning and preparation assistance, we encourage you to contact our offices today by calling (904) 330-0268 or emailing dbrock@brockcpa.com.  If you know fellow business owners who would benefit from this information, please do forward it to them. After nearly 3 years, Florida is finally about to do so. On April 19th, 2021, Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law a tax package, Senate Bill 50, to require out-of-state online retailers to collect sales taxes on purchases made by Floridians. Beginning on July 1st, 2021, retailers selling more than $100,000 a year online will have to start collecting 6% sales tax from residents at the point of sale. Businesses who sell less than $100,000 a year online will be exempt from collecting this tax. How much will this cost me? While Floridians may view this law as controversial, many will be surprised to learn that they will simply be paying tax on something they were supposed to be paying for years. Very few know that consumers who did not pay sales taxes on their online orders are supposed to download a form a pay those associated taxes to the state on their own. The good news is that the new legislation will also forgive those who have neglected to voluntarily pay taxes on remote sales that occurred before the effective date, and will protect them from being audited in the future. Where is the revenue going? Supporters claim that the new law will bring in an additional $1 billion a year in revenue that previously went uncollected to help replenish the unemployment trust fund, which was significantly reduced due to the job losses during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is estimated to take roughly 4 years to restore. After the unemployment trust fund has been filled, the money will go towards lowering the tax businesses pay on commercial rentals. At Brock CPA, we stay up to date with the ever-changing tax laws and work with you to analyze changes in your business and personal situation to see how tax law changes may impact you. We pride ourselves in smart, ethical, accurate, and timely tax planning, preparation, and filing. We encourage you to contact our offices if you have any further questions or concerns regarding the new tax package by calling 904-330-0268 or emailing dbrock@brockcpa.com. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image="13980" img_size="100px" alignment="center"][vc_column_text] Tax Cheating Could be Costing the Government $1 Trillion A Year Earlier this year, the head of the IRS calculated that the U.S. government is losing roughly $1 trillion in unpaid taxes each year. This tax gap has increased drastically since that last official estimate of $441 billion annual average from 2011-2013. These estimates are taking new factors into consideration such as the use of cryptocurrency and illegally sourced income that goes undetected by the IRS. Some may ask: who pays the price when wealthy taxpayers evade their obligations? Unfortunately, the answer is these costs are endured by taxpayers who are actually following the law. The considerable difference between tax dollars owed and what is actually collected by the IRS has given lawmakers the incentive to promote more aggressive tax enforcement to ultimately increase government income. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image="13981" img_size="full" alignment="center"][vc_column_text] Wealthy Evaders The majority of individuals earn their income through wages where taxes are automatically deducted from each paycheck. However, pass through entities, such as partnerships and limited liability corporations, are not subject to automatic withholding. This advantage gives owners a better opportunity to bypass certain tax obligations. A recent study has shown that the richest 1 percent of Americans do not report about 20% of their income to the government through this strategy, costing the government around $175 billion a year. Biden’s New Tax Enforcement Approach Moving forward, President Joe Biden has proposed his Made in America Tax Plan with the goal to give the IRS an extra $80 billion in order to strengthen tax enforcement on individuals and corporations that evade paying federal taxes. He plans to use the redeemed tax funds for the cost of his American Families Plan. Bidens new plan also comes on top of a $2.3 trillion infrastructure-led spending proposal. During these occurrences, scammers will use fraudulent IRS logos in attempt to gain access to victims’ personal and financial information which may lead to tax-related fraud and stolen identities. Always be one step ahead. It is highly recommended that people take extra precautions during this time. Not only should taxpayers watch for fraudulent emails, but also text messages, website links, and social media outreach that may be requesting personal information.Traditionally, the IRS will deposit economic impact payments into the direct deposit account that taxpayers previously provided on their tax returns. If no account was provided, taxpayers should expect to receive their returns via a check in the mail to the address on file. The IRS has also reminded retirees to be especially careful of these new scams. It remains true that no action is needed from seniors to receive their economic impact payments, and they should expect no agency to reach out to them for additional information. This tax season has been especially difficult for many. Unfortunately, these types of criminal attempts are typically targeted towards groups of people who are vulnerable or in a state of need. IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig has reminded taxpayers that “The IRS isn’t going to call you asking to verify or provide your financial information so you can get an economic impact payment or your refund faster.” If you believe that a message you have received is fraudulent, you are most likely correct. The IRS plans to significantly increase the focus on cryptocurrency by hiring outside contractors who are experts in the subject to help them identify virtual currency investors who have submitted tax returns that omit or contain incorrect information regarding their transactions.Additionally, the following question has been put on Page 1 of the Form 1040: “At any time during 2020, did you sell, send, exchange, or otherwise acquire financial interest in any virtual currency?” to further increase focus and awareness for taxpayers. While Floridians may view this law as controversial, many will be surprised to learn that they will simply be paying tax on something they were supposed to be paying for years.Very few know that consumers who did not pay sales taxes on their online orders are supposed to download a form a pay those associated taxes to the state on their own. The good news is that the new legislation will also forgive those who have neglected to voluntarily pay taxes on remote sales that occurred before the effective date, and will protect them from being audited in the future. Common warning signs of scammers may include:  Using terms such as “stimulus payment” or “stimulus check”. Asking taxpayers to sign over their economic impact check to them. Being contacted through phone, email or social media to provide personal information. Being told you can receive your tax refunds and relief payments faster. Receiving a bogus check and being asked to verify personal information to cash it. The IRS Criminal Investigation Division is working to identify scammers and shut them down. In the meantime, the best way to stay up to date with the latest information regarding economic relief for COVID-19 is to visit IRS.gov. What Is Cryptocurrency?   Cryptocurrency has been a hot topic of discussion for many years now. For those who may be new to the subject, cryptocurrency is a form of digital currency or payment that can be exchanged for products and services. Low fees, online safety, easy access, and the potential for profit are a few reasons why cryptocurrency has become so relevant, especially in recent years. You could even say that cryptocurrencies are considered the future of money by many individuals. However, it has been recognized that millions of taxpayers have neglected to report their use or trading of cryptocurrency, making themselves central targets of Operation Hidden Treasure –a new IRS initiative that identifies taxpayers who have unreported income from currency transactions. If you have invested in cryptocurrency, prepare for increased potential of IRS audit.                                                  The IRS plans to significantly increase the focus on cryptocurrency by hiring outside contractors who are experts in the subject to help them identify virtual currency investors who have submitted tax returns that omit or contain incorrect information regarding their transactions. Additionally, the following question has been put on Page 1 of the Form 1040: “At any time during 2020, did you sell, send, exchange, or otherwise acquire financial interest in any virtual currency?” to further increase focus and awareness for taxpayers. Turn to your CPA for assistance It has been estimated that roughly 18-21 million taxpayers will need to consider cryptocurrency transactions while preparing for the 2021 tax season. As of today, there are over 5,000 types of cryptocurrency with single taxpayers making thousands of transactions yearly. As a result of the IRS performing more audits along with the overall complexity of this process, it is predicted that those who have been involved with cryptocurrency will rely heavily on their CPA for assistance. In contrast to stocks and bonds, there is no brokerage statement or 1099 for cryptocurrency. This means that taxpayers need to be transparent with their CPA to work on each individual transaction made throughout the year. At Brock CPA, we stay up to date with the ever-changing tax laws and work with you to analyze changes in your business and personal situation to see how tax law changes may impact you. We pride ourselves in smart, ethical, We understand that navigating the ever-evolving rules regarding cryptocurrency imposed by the IRS can be challenging for many. Brock CPA consists of financial experts who provide a variety of taxation and accounting services tailored to your specific needs. In 2020, the IRS extended tax deadlines in response to COVID-19. Generally, deadlines for annual returns are in the spring with extensions available until the fall. Although dates are always subject to change, no such provisions have been enacted to date for this year. Here are the current dates you should have noted in your calendar for filing your 2020 business and individual income tax returns in 2021: While the IRS typically begins processing tax returns in late January, it is likely that the date for accepting 2020 tax returns will be announced the first week of January 2021. There are also other important dates that have been announced but are still subject to change as we enter the new year. Individual Income Tax Returns: April 15th, 2021  Estimated Tax Payments:  This past year, these payments were due on July 15th and September 15th. Typically, there would have been two further payments on April 15th and June 15th for the second quarters, but the IRS delayed them due to the coronavirus pandemic. The last estimated payment for the 2020 tax year will be due on January 15th, 2021.  Partnership Returns:  Will be due on March 15th, 2021 with the extended deadline being September 15th, 2021.  C-Corporation Income Tax Returns:  For C-corporations that operate on a calendar year, these returns will be due on April 15th, 2021 with the extended deadline being October 15th, 2021. If the corporation operates on a fiscal year, the deadline for C-corporation returns is always the 15th day of the fourth month that follows the end of the corporation’s fiscal year.  S-Corporation Returns:  For corporations operating on a calendar year, these returns will be due on March 15th, 2021 with the extended deadline being September 15th, 2021. If the corporation operates on a fiscal year, the deadline for S-corporation and partnership returns is always the 15th day of the fourth month following the end of the fiscal year. For more 2021 calendar dates regarding 2020 tax returns, you can view an early release draft of an IRS tax form, instructions or publication provided by the IRS for your information. Not only does sorting through the data take time, but business owners also need to know where to find relevant information and how to use the information when evaluating options. Certified financial officer advisory services give business owners access to a knowledgeable financial professional who can provide guidance, without requiring businesses to hire a C-level financial executive. CFO advisory services can take on several different forms, with some businesses consulting their advisor just once and others meeting on a regular (e.g. monthly) basis. In all cases, however, the CFO advisor will first get to know a business. The initial phase usually beings with addressing an imminent issue that a business faces, and then this may grow into a continued advisory relationship. The issues that a CFO advisor can assist with are diverse and include almost any financial situation a business faces. Many entrepreneurs first hire an advisor when they set up their business, but owners of established businesses also come to advisors when they face additional tax issues. In some situations, a CFO advisor functions akin to a board of directors and provides ongoing guidance as needed. Moreover, a CFO advisor is able to (and often does) work with other consultants and advisors to provide business owners with the most comprehensive guidance possible. Depending on the situation a business needs help with, a CFO advisor might worth with legal professionals, other financial professionals or even other types of consultants. If you need help with a financial business decision, contact the team at Brock CPA. We assist an array of businesses with diverse financial needs, and we’re committed to helping you thoroughly analyze your business’ situation so that you can make an informed decision and do what’s best for the business. Regards,Daniel and the team at Brock CPA ### Business Advisory Business Advisory Jacksonville in Florida Successfully running a business requires technical financial expertise and strategic planning. Many business owners struggle with both of these, as they often aren’t financial professionals and they always have too much to do. At Brock CPA, we offer business advisory services that provide assistance in these specific areas. When a new client comes to us seeking assistance with their business, we first familiarize ourselves with their company and address any immediate issue. We’re then able to turn our attention to longer-term planning, focusing on what will help a business grow and be more successful. For new businesses, this work often involves laying a foundation that will position the company well in the future. We might help founders decide what type of entity to set a business up as, how to secure the financing they need and how to set up a strong ownership structure. For established businesses, we might focus on how to incentivize and retain key personnel, how to bring in new owners and investors, how to acquire another company, or how to sell a division of a company. Exactly what we do depends on what a particular business needs. At all times, we’re conscious of cash flow and how it impacts a business. We frequently help clients improve their cash flow management by developing projections, creating capital strategies, and reviewing operations for efficiency and effectiveness. Our goal is to prevent cash flow emergencies and help increase overall profitability, and we’ve done this many times. Whether your business is just getting started or has been around forever, contact the team at Brock CPA when you need help with technical or strategic planning. We’ll study your business and find ways to maximize its potential. Regards, The Brock CPA Team ### Accounting Tips Accounting practices encompass much more than merely filing taxes at year’s end and making quarterly estimated payments. How you structure your business’ accounting has a direct impact on profits, operational efficiencies and more. Here Are Five Must-Know Accounting Tips to Help Your Business Achieve Its Maximum Potential: 1.) Use cloud-based time tracking software to record when employees clock in and out. A cloud-based solution works for both employees who are at the office and anyone who works remotely, and there’s a variety of applications available for different industries. Once implemented, the software will make it easier to keep track of regular time, overtime, paid time off and other compensated hours. 2.) Have employees make approved purchases with company-issued purchase cards rather than their personal cards. Using personal cards requires paying invoices, which creates a few potential problems: submitting multiple receipts at once can strain cash flow, paying receipts individually increases work for accounts payable, and mathematic errors can be made. Purchase cards are easier to reconcile and require reviewing purchases just once per month. 3.) Make sure accounts receivable is diligent in their work. While you may need to be flexible with customers who truly can’t afford to pay immediately, your business also must be firm so that it collects what’s due. Without payment in the bank account, your business is losing money. 4.) Take advantage of Section 179 whenever your business purchases qualifying equipment or software. This portion of the tax code lets businesses depreciate qualifying asset purchases in the year they’re first used rather than over the life of the asset. Often, this results in a major tax break when you buy new equipment. 5.) Work with a certified public accountant when exploring accounting or tax issues. CPAs are specialized professionals who can provide sage advice, and save your business a lot of money and time.If you need assistance keeping your business on track through the current pandemic, do not hesitate to reach out to us here at Brock CPA. If you have any questions about your accounting strategies, feel free to contact us at Brock CPA. ### 15 Steps Small Buisnesses Should Take To Survive COVID-19 The Covid-19 Pandemic has upended life for many small and large business owners across America and the world. Thousands of businesses have been forced to close their doors to prevent further spread of the disease, while others have been dealing with radical disruption due to much of our nation’s workforce and consumers having been asked to shelter at home. For business owners who are unsure of what steps to take next to give themselves the best opportunity to successfully navigate Covid-19, here is an easy-to-follow, to-the-point action plan of steps to take. Take immediate Financial Triage - Where do you stand? What’s coming in? What is going out? Reduce Expenses - Consolidate loans; reduce credit card debt and interest; develop a budget and stick to it; look for cost-effective ways to market using social media, blogs or other digital marketing; consider bartering. Reduce Salaries - If needed, reduce salaries, furlough employees or shift some of your workers from full-time to part-time. Try to support your employees by looking at all options prior to cutting staff. Remember, you don’t want to lose them if you plan to bring them back. Collect Past Due Bills Quickly - If things get worse, this won’t get easier, so your best bet is to be proactive! If people have issues paying, agree upon a payment plan. Delay Your Tax Payment or Use Your Refund to Help the Business - The filing deadline has been extended to July 15, 2020. File immediately if you have not for the PPP loan/grant. If your existing bank did not come through you may be able to now do it through a new lender, here. Consider filing for Disaster Relief Programs - There are significant grants available for employers who keep their workers on payroll, as well as fast, low interest loans to for immediate assistance. Investigate Your Local Municipality Loan Options - The City of Jacksonville and others around the country are offering their own assistance to small business. Take advantage of every opportunity that makes sense. Rely on Credit Lines - While not the preferred manner of operating, these are the types of situations where relying on credit is useful and reasonable. Create Covid-19 Policies for Your Company - If employees are working from home, develop a simple set of policies to ensure effective communication and productivity. Use free technologies like Zoom, Google Docs and other apps to facilitate virtual business. Increase Revenue - Easier said than done, we know. But consider what products or services you offer that make the most sense right now. Then focus your efforts on marketing those. Adjust Your Business to the New Economy - If none of your current product or service offerings offer great appeal in the current market, consider how you might shift. (i.e. Like a liquor distillery that begins manufacturing hand sanitizer). Create a Structured Marketing and Outreach Strategy for Current Customers and Prospects - Remember - email, phone calls, social media- these are all inexpensive tools at your disposal. Begin Planning for the Reopening of the Country - Remember, this won’t last forever and there may even be a big bounce due to pent-up demand for many products and services on the other side. How can you take advantage of it? Acquire Your Competition -  Sadly, many businesses will struggle to survive Covid-19. If you find yourself in a  favorable position with the resources to weather the storm, you may find it an opportunity to acquire a competitor or other new business, perhaps one with a very strong brand that just wasn’t able to survive the current crisis without assistance. This can be a win-win for both businesses. If you need assistance keeping your business on track through the current pandemic, do not hesitate to reach out to us here at Brock CPA. ### COVID-19 Update Clients and Friends, In this crazy time we are thinking of you all and wish good health for you, your families and colleagues. Our firm is taking the recommendations of health officials seriously and we are working remotely. As a reminder here is a list of our cell phone numbers: Daniel Brock– 904-710-1900 Kathleen Garner – 850-728-9230 Katie Lee – 805-305-7654 Stacy Dawson – 754-779-0680 Tax Related Updates due to COVID-19: The IRS extended the filing deadline from April 15th to July 15th but there are details and other deadlines in that window not finalized yet. If you end up owing taxes for 2019, you do not have to pay that tax until July 15, 2020 with no interest or penalties. Even though personal tax returns are not due until July 15th, we are working diligently to have your return done as soon as possible. In Addition, President Trump signed the COVID-19 Aid Package Legislation into law last week which includes changes to emergency paid sick leave, qualified disaster payments, potential loans to small businesses and related employer payroll tax credits. This is an evolving situation with more happening every day. We are staying on top of it and look forward to helping you through this. If you have any questions about these changes, please do not hesitate to call with any questions, Daniel Brock and the team at Brock CPA ### Compilations and Review     Stockholders, private investors and creditors all want financial assurances, which are provided via statements. Depending on what your business’ investors and creditors are asking for, we at Brock CPA offer a couple of document preparation services that can appease outside parties. Compilation services are the more basic option of the two. For this, our team relies on information that you or your management team provides to prepare the necessary financial documents. We rely on our general understanding of your business and expertise in accounting to create the statements, and those statements are then presented to your business or the appropriate third party. Since compiling doesn’t include any form of inquiry into your business’ practices, this service doesn’t provide any level of assurance from our firm. We simply make available information that your business provides. Compilation services may be used in place of full disclosure financial statements, depending on what an investor or creditor wants to know. Review servicesgo one step further and involve a review of your business. The review process involves surveying company personnel and looking at analytical procedures, and any insights gained are applied to the financial data that needs to be presented.Because we actually review what your business’ people and books, this service does provide some level of assurance. Specifically, we provide limited assurance that your business is in line with the U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.  Review services let your business utilize the technical expertise of a CPA without undergoing a full audit. If your business needs assistance with presenting financial reports to investors and/or creditors, contact the team of professionals at Brock CPA. We’ll help you decide whether compilation or review services are more appropriate in your situation. Regards, Daniel and the team at Brock CPA ### Getting Tax Ready for 2020 The transition from one year to the next always brings a flurry of financial activity for both individuals and businesses. While the exact items that individuals and businesses must take care of are different, the steps on how they should navigate this time of transition is largely the same. No matter what your position is, here’s how to prepare financially for the beginning of next year. Before year’s end, make sure you’ve fully capitalized on any tax-advantaged opportunities you want to take advantage of. For individuals, this may involve maxing out account contributions, using account funds that won’t roll over and making donations. For businesses, this might be investing in capital expenditures and making donations. In addition to any regular quarterly reports that are regularly compiled, end-of-year statements must also be assembled and gathered at this time. This may be as simple as waiting for a W-2 to come in the mail and then submitting it, or the preparation might include much more involved financial reports that businesses must file. The timing can also vary, but reports have to be completed somewhere around this time of year depending on the document. At any point in this process or once everything is ready, individuals and businesses should meet with a certified public accountant. From filing personal income taxes to in-depth business planning for the next year, a CPA can assist with almost any financial topics that come up at this time of year. If you need a CPA, reach out to the professionals at Brock CPA. We’d be happy to help with whatever end-of-year financial needs you have. Regards,Daniel and the team at Brock CPA       ### End of Year Planning   As the end of the calendar year approaches, there are several steps individuals should take to take full advantage of their benefits and minimize their tax liability.  If any of these situations apply to you, make sure you take whatever action is necessary before the days in 2019 run out.     Use Outstanding Flexible Spending Account Benefits   Tax law now allows individuals who have flexible spending accounts to carry over up to $500 in their account, but that is the maximum allowed amount. Anything beyond $500 that’s in an account and not spent by year’s end is forfeited. If you have an FSA and fully used its benefits, make sure you spend anything over $500 by December 31. This is a good time to schedule doctors appointments, including optometrist and dental appointments, or to stock up on approved medical supplies. Should you have a large medical bill, you might even be able to split payment across the new year.     Maximize Savings Account Contribution   To take full advantage of the benefits offered by tax-advantaged retirement and college savings accounts, you should reach the maximum contribution to any account that you have before year’s end. The maximums vary depending on what kind of account you have and (with retirement accounts) your age, but reaching the contribution limit will always yield the greatest tax savings. If you don’t have a retirement or college savings account set up, you can still create one and contribute to it by December 31.     Make Charitable Donations     The holiday season is usually when people are most generous to charities, and year-end donations could help reduce your tax burden if you itemize on your return.Every donation made to a 501(c)3 non-profit is deductible -- just get a receipt to show your contribution.     For help preparing your finances before the endof the year, contact Brock CPA.    Regards, The Team at Brock CPA         ### 5 Tips To Earn An Entrepreneurs Paycheck Working for yourself as an entrepreneur is rewarding and fun but the ultimate goal of any for-profit business owner is to earn income from their business. When your business is ready, here are five tips on how to draw an entrepreneur’s paycheck. First, make sure your business is financially able to pay you. If you aren’t consistently showing a profit and have some cash reserves in the business, don’t start withdrawing money yet. You’ll only hurt growth and potentially put the business at risk. In this situation, you need to live off of another income source or savings until the business becomes reliably profitable. Second, determine whether you take a regular salary or an owner’s withdrawal. The former gives you a set paycheck much like an employee would receive, and the latter pays you from the company’s proceeds. Which method is required or preferred depends on mulitple factors begining with entity type. Third, figure out what a reasonable salary would be if you hired an employee to do the operational work you currently do. If you do need to pay yourself a salary, job postings at other businesses and online salary reporting websites are helpful for this. The numbers you see will prove an estimated range for your salary. Fourth, consult a certified public accountant to review the tax implications of withdrawing a paycheck. Speak with a CPA before you begin, so you can take advantage of any tax-savings opportunities they identify. Even when bookkeeping staff are keeping up with accounts payable & receivable, taxes, and compliance issues, they may not have the experience necessary to generate key reports, analyze data, and make the right decisions to move the company to its next growth phase. Most small businesses are not in a position to hire a full-time “Chief Financial officer” or “CFO”. For these business owners, Brock CPA offers Fractional CFO services in Jacksonville. Fractional CFO services can be a significant asset to any business, helping companies scale more quickly than they otherwise would, at a fraction of the cost of a full-time CFO.   By using our CFO services, you’ll enjoy all the benefits of having your own financial management expert and business strategist who can help with things like financial planning, cash flow tracking and financial analysis. An outsourced CFO can help you control costs, hire at the right times and protect profits. They can build a financial plan that works, minimizing risks and achieving maximum ROI. They can prepare accurate reports for board members and investors, and help you and other stakeholders understand where the company stands, where it’s headed, and how to maximize its growth potential.
